How to send large video files without losing quality

Video is where every convenient sharing method falls apart. The file is too big for email, too big for most free tiers, and the apps that will take it quietly destroy it first. If you have ever sent someone a crisp 4K clip and watched them receive a soft, blocky version, you have met the problem.
This guide covers why it happens, how large video files actually are, and how to move them intact.
Why your video arrives worse than it left
Messaging platforms do not send your video. They send a video, re-encoded to keep their bandwidth costs down and to guarantee it plays on every device. Typical treatment includes downscaling the resolution, dropping the bitrate hard, cutting the frame rate, and stripping metadata.
The result is a file a fraction of the original size — which is the point, from the platform's perspective. It is also irreversible. No amount of processing recovers detail that was thrown away, so if the recipient needs to edit, print a frame, or view it on anything larger than a phone, the original matters.
Rough limits you are working against:
- Email: around 25 MB total, including the encoding overhead. That is roughly four seconds of 4K footage.
- Most messaging apps: hard caps in the tens or low hundreds of megabytes, plus recompression well before that.
- Free cloud tiers: generous on size, but you upload the whole file, wait, and the recipient downloads it again.
How big is video, really?
Useful reference points for phone footage, which is the most common source:
- 1080p at 30 fps: roughly 60 to 90 MB per minute
- 4K at 30 fps: roughly 200 to 350 MB per minute
- 4K at 60 fps: roughly 400 MB per minute
- ProRes or similar on a recent iPhone: around 6 GB per minute
A ten-minute 4K60 clip is about 4 GB. A short ProRes take can be larger than an entire free cloud storage allowance. Cameras and drones produce larger files still.
Moving the original, intact
A direct browser transfer sidesteps both problems at once. There is no upload step, because the file goes straight from one device to the other, and there is no re-encoding, because the transfer moves raw bytes rather than interpreting them as video.
- On the device holding the video, open sharebetweendevices.com and choose Send.
- Select the video file.
- Share the link or PIN with the receiving device, or scan the QR code.
- The file streams across as-is. A checksum is compared at both ends when it finishes, so you know it arrived complete.
Because the data is streamed rather than held in one piece, there is no fixed size ceiling on desktop and Android — the practical limit is time and free disk space on the receiving device.
How long it takes
On a shared Wi-Fi network, a direct transfer runs at local network speed. Ballpark figures for a 4 GB file:
- Direct over modern Wi-Fi: roughly 1 to 3 minutes
- Direct over older 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi: roughly 10 to 20 minutes
- Relayed through the internet at 20 Mbps upload: around 27 minutes
- Upload to cloud, then download again: the upload time above, plus the recipient's download time, plus the wait in between

Practical advice for multi-gigabyte transfers
- Keep both devices awake. Phones and laptops suspend background tabs, and a suspended tab stops the transfer. Leave the browser in the foreground and extend the auto-lock interval.
- Plug in, or start with plenty of battery. Sustained Wi-Fi throughput for twenty minutes is real power draw on a phone.
- Check free space on the receiving device first. Nothing is more annoying than a transfer that dies at 90 percent because the disk filled.
- Prefer sending from the phone rather than to it when the file is very large, especially to an iPhone, where a received file is held before you save it.
- Use a hotspot if there is no shared Wi-Fi. Connecting one device to the other's personal hotspot creates a private local network, and the traffic never leaves it, so it costs no mobile data.
When you should compress after all
Sending the original is not always right. If the recipient is going to watch the clip on a phone and never edit it, a 4 GB file is a waste of everyone's time and storage. Compress deliberately — export at 1080p from any video tool — rather than letting a messaging app do it badly and without asking. The rule of thumb: send the original when the file will be edited, archived, or shown on a large screen; compress on purpose when it will only be watched once on a phone.
