About ShareBetweenDevices
ShareBetweenDevices is a free, browser-based tool for moving files and clipboard text directly between two devices. There is no account to create, no app to install, and nothing is uploaded to a server. The file travels straight from one browser to the other over an encrypted peer-to-peer connection.
Why we built it
Moving a file between two devices that belong to you is still strangely awkward. Emailing a file to yourself bumps into attachment limits. Cloud drives ask you to sign in, sync, and trust a third party with your data. AirDrop only works inside Apple's ecosystem. Most “free” transfer services upload your file to their servers, store it for days, and cap the free tier at a couple of gigabytes.
We wanted something that just works in any browser, on any operating system, without making you think about accounts, apps, or where your data ends up. So we built a tool around WebRTC — the same peer-to-peer technology that powers video calls — to send the file directly between the two devices instead of through a middleman.
What makes it different
- Nothing is uploaded. Your file is never copied to or stored on our servers. It streams browser-to-browser and disappears when you close the tab.
- No account, ever. Open the site, pick a file, share a QR code or a 4-digit PIN. That is the whole flow.
- No size limit. Because there is no upload step, you are not paying to store anything, so there is no hard cap on file size.
- Encrypted in transit. Every byte is protected by DTLS encryption built into the WebRTC standard.
- Cross-platform. Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iPhone, and iPad — anything with a modern browser.
How the project is funded
ShareBetweenDevices is free to use and intended to stay that way. To cover hosting and development, the site displays ads through Google AdSense. We do not sell user data, we do not track what you transfer, and the ads never have access to your files — your files are never uploaded to or stored on our servers. On a network that blocks direct connections the transfer switches to a relay by itself so it still goes through, and even then the relay only forwards encrypted bytes it cannot read.
